Scott Brothers Duo (brothers Jonathan & Tom Scott)
are widely acknowledged as leading champions of music for harmonium
and piano duo and they have performed Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle
in its original 1863 instrumentation many times. With the growing interest
in historical performance practice surrounding the French pressure harmonium,
many choirs hire an instrument for their Rossini performance, but even
after the event, it is often the case that audience and choir members
are still left unaware of how this wonderful instrument works and how
versatile and important it was to major late nineteenth century composers.
Jonathan Scott provides pre-concert talks about the history of the harmonium
with demonstrations from the solo harmonium repertoire. With a full
and easy to understand introduction to the instrument, audiences are
able to gain greater understanding and enjoyment from this extremely
important and much neglected musical instrument.
The Rossini "Messe Solennelle" programme can be further enhanced
with a short 'overture' by Scott Brothers Duo of music from the vast
repertoire for harmonium and piano duo. This allows audiences the opportunity
to hear the instruments alone, before the choir and soloists take to
the stage. A selection of some of these works can be heard on Scott
Brothers Duo's acclaimed CD recording DUOS FOR HARMONIUM & PIANO
which combines an 1880 Mustel harmonium and a Steinway concert grand
piano in original works and transcriptions by Franck, Saint-Saëns,
Gounod, Guilmant and Mascagni. (CLICK FOR DETAILS)
